The Annexe at The Croft
Luxurious self-catering accommodation for 6 people
Situated in the idyllic village of Marsh Gibbon surrounded by farm land and away from the hustle and bustle of city life, The Croft is a charming 500 year old Grade II listed thatched house that once upon a time used to be the village shop and post office.
Alongside the house sits a detached, newly refurbished private annexe, which was originally converted from a traditional barn. This beautifully appointed haven offers self-catering accommodation of exceptional quality consisting of 3 comfortable double bedrooms, 2 bathrooms (1 en suite) and a lounge/diner large enough to accommodate 6 people with fully equipped kitchen including a dishwasher, washer /dryer and iron with ironing board. The annexe has free wi-fi, smart TVs in the bedrooms and lounge and hair dryers in all bedrooms.
The proprietors, Sue and Jonathan, who wish to make your stay as comfortable as possible are on hand to assist with any queries you may have and will ensure that the fridge is stocked with milk, orange juice, butter and eggs upon your arrival for your convenience. Complimentary tea, coffee and sugar are also provided.
At the end of a shared driveway with plenty of off-street parking available, the annexe has its own private entrance which allows guests the ability to come and go as they please.
The gorgeous garden full of colourful flowers, shrubbery, willow trees, silver birches, and apple trees, offers heaps of sprawling lawn space on which to play Pétanque or croquet and a peaceful environment in which to relax and unwind with a good book or observe the bountiful birdlife. A small seasonal stream runs through the centre of the garden and a quaint summerhouse is a wonderful spot to have a cup of afternoon tea with friends or watch the sun set with a delicious cocktail in hand.
Marsh Gibbon covers an area of about 2,800 acres. It is steeped in history dating back more than 1,000 years with many of the houses in the area constructed out of the traditional Cotswolds stone so characteristic of Oxfordshire.
The village name comes from the word ‘marsh’ as this is the typical state of land in the area due to the high water table. ‘Gibbon’ derives from the surname ‘Gibwen’ who were the family that were lords of the manor here in the twelfth century. Records reveal that in 1086 the village was known simply as ‘Merse’ however in manorial rolls of 1292 it was recorded as Mersh Gibwyne.
There are a couple of pubs in the village which are in the process of being refurbished and a village shop which incorporates a post office has recently been built and will open at the end of September 2022. The nearby villages of Launton and Stratton Audley to the west and Grendon Underwood to the east also offer pubs and village shops.
St Mary’s is a beautiful Grade II listed church in the heart of the village and well worth a visit. Next door is Manor Farm Barn, a lovely wedding venue which is understandably very much in demand.
The area is popular for walkers and cyclists along the quiet country roads and footpaths.
Marsh Gibbon is conveniently located 4 miles from Bicester and the shopping paradise known as Bicester Village. Bicester is a large bustling town with plenty of shops including a Tesco Superstore and large Boots pharmacy. There are also a number of good restaurants and pubs in the area to satisfy a variety of palates. There is a bus stop in close proximity to The Croft with buses leaving every couple of hours for Bicester.
